A Quick Guide to Identity Theft for Teens

One important thing teens nowadays should know about identity theft is that it affects everyone, not just professionals belonging to a certain age group or salary bracket.

A teenager’s profile can be used by a criminal to obtain a loan, get a job or purchase products through credit card transactions. The list of possibilities does not end here. A criminal can even use your information to obtain a driver’s license!

One of the main avenues where a teen’s identity is most vulnerable to exposure to identity theft is the internet. Nowadays, rarely do teenagers go through a day without using the internet. Teenagers shop for clothes, order food, communicate with friends and family through the internet. To make things even more convenient, bills can also be paid through the internet. Keep in mind that the more transactions you enter into, the higher your chances are of being a victim.

There are many ways to lessen your chances of being a victim. The basic rules include ensuring that the personal and financial information you provide will be protected from hackers by installing a firewall. Also, make sure that you install effective anti-virus software. As a teenager, you are probably one of the millions who have signed up for the networking websites that are currently very popular. Ensure that your profile is open only to your trusted contacts like your family and friends. Check your privacy settings and ensure that your basic information details and pictures are closed to contacts only. We know how easy it is to copy and paste pictures without permission. Also, as an additional measure, make sure that your passwords for these networking sites and your emails are not easy to predict. Do not choose passwords that are connected to your birthday or name. That information is just too easy for the identity theft criminal to guess.

If you regularly use your credit card for online transactions, make sure that the website you are using is a reputable website with a known and secure payment system. Immediately check with your credit card company thereafter if you were charged the right amount. Scour through your credit card statements thoroughly to make sure that you were not charged for any product or service which you did not purchase. It is always wise to be organized about financial records. Do not carelessly leave these files around and shred them periodically, and if you get your monthly records through an electronic statement, use a strong password and ensure that you log out successfully after logging in to your emails.

Teenagers should realize is that identity theft is a serious matter and it does not choose its victims. It doesn’t matter if you are young and you think your money is not large enough to be coveted by an identity theft criminal. Your identity is priceless and that is your most important asset, thus you should take preventive measures to ensure that you do not become a victim in your young age.
