Avoiding Identity Theft When Online Job Searching
As we continue to grow into the computer age, it seems like anybody who is looking for a job is doing an online job search. Long gone are the days of simply looking through the local newspaper and circling jobs that fit your skills. Nowadays, the internet offers so many more opportunities for employment both locally and with work at home jobs. But, along with the popularity of the online job search came the increase of identity theft.
There are certain precautions that you can take to make sure that you are not a victim of identity theft when searching online for a job. Identity thieves know that most people who are searching for a job online may be desperate for money and to get a job so they will employ tactics that are greatly appealing to them. A good saying to follow is “If it seems too good to be true, it most likely is.” If someone is offering you a job that you sound simple or you hardly have to put any work into and says you will be making a 6 figure salary, it’s too good to be true. Avoid these jobs at all cost when searching for a job online.
Another good idea is to avoid any job posting that has improper grammar or is too vague. Every once in awhile these job postings may be for real jobs, but the majority of the time they are scams or people looking to steal your identity. Ask yourself if it is really worth the possible trouble of having to deal with identity theft to apply for the possible job.
Most importantly when applying for jobs over the web make sure you are not giving out personal information like your social security number of your bank account information. There is no need for a potential employer to have this information. Only after you are hired by the company and you have verified that they are a real company and have good standing, should you give the company any personal information. If a job is requesting personal information up-front, it is most likely a scammer who is looking to make you a victim of identity theft. Also, never have given your social security to any online resume boards or companies. There is no reason for them to have it.
By not giving out your personal information to just anybody when looking for a job online you can protect your identity from the scammers. If you were to give out your social security number to an identity thief, they could do so much damage with your information. They could cause financial havoc on your life, cause problems with getting future employment, and steal all of your money from any bank accounts or stock investments that you may have. Instead of having to spend hundreds of hours getting your identity back from a thief, it is better to just prevent the theft in the first place.
