Medical Identity Theft Is A Real Risk
There are so many types of identity theft out there that many of them get overlooked, and that’s dangerous because some things you may not typically consider to be so dangerous can affect your credit in a very negative way. Such as, one of the fastest growing methods of identity theft, Medical Fraud. Identity theft through the use of stolen medical information, whether it be insurance or information found in medical records, is one of the most devastating and painstaking to reverse processes financially, because medical fraud can cut your credit score pretty deeply.
Identity thieves can use your insurance information to file their own medical claims using your identity. Allowing them medical care while you are sent the bill for any services rendered. And the major problem therein, is unpaid medical bills can really smash your credit score, bringing it down to an unfavorable level pretty quickly. Not to mention it can take months or even years to fully expunge the fraudulent information from your records.
Medical fraud can also lead to incorrect information in your medical records, which can lead to incorrect diagnoses later in life, based upon check-ups and medical evaluations that were performed on the identity thief and not yourself.
Common techniques you can employ to reduce your risk of damage from medical fraud include always reviewing medical statements from doctors and hospitals to ensure all information is correct. Report any discrepancies to the proper authority immediately once you notice them, to ensure everything can be resolved as quickly as possible.
And first and foremost, make sure that you guard your insurance cards the same way you would protect your credit card information, or social security card. Your insurance cards have just as much vital personal information as the other two, and could be used against you just as viciously as stolen credit card numbers or a stolen social security card.
