Convenience Versus Security
With the increases in dependency on internet services, such as banking, with the ability to pay for bills, or to pay off your mortgage, or any number of other things via the internet, the job for an identity thief has only gotten easier. The problem with convenience services like these, when it’s easy for you to enter some information on your computer, and accomplish things like taking out loan, a line of credit, or paying a bill, is that it’s made just as easy for a criminal to use that information against you. Because services now are requiring less and less personal information to check up and actually verify your identity, it’s almost ridiculous how easily an identity thief can use that information against you.
A society where you can walk into a store and get a thousand dollar line of credit within fifteen minutes, makes things fairly difficult in the way of stopping ID thieves in their tracks. Mainly because, anything that is easy for you to acquire, like a fast line of credit or even a car loan, is also easy for an identity thief to acquire. And in most cases, having something as simple as your name, address, and telephone number is just enough for them to pose as you. All three bits of information not necessarily something that most would consider vital pieces of personal info, but they are.
But, as with any other form of identity theft there are precautionary steps you can take. Keep your personal info personal, except for in a case where it is absolutely necessary, or only give such information to people and businesses that you trust. Make sure you never log onto a laptop in a public place and enter any personal information, as anything sent out over a public wi-fi connection can easily be read by an identity thief who’s also using the signal. Just use common sense and you should be just fine.
