Everyday Tips To Protect Your Identity
Changing your everyday living habits is the best way to protect yourself, and avoid identity theft. By taking quick, easy measures into your daily routine, you can really lower the chances of becoming a victim. Most people don’t realize how easy the changes are. But really, these simple tips won’t really make that big of an impact on your day to day activities. But they’ll put a huge dent in a thief’s ability to steal your identity.
Start out by just cleaning out your purse or wallet. If you have a lot of material in there, chances are most of it is trash anyway. Take out credit cards you never use, and your social security number. This way if your purse/wallet is stolen, there’s less information available to steal. Your SSN card is the important one here. You almost never need that, so don’t carry it on you unless you know beforehand that you will need that form of identity.
If you find yourself just throwing your junk mail into the trash, that’s a habit you need to change. That mail has your name and address, and could have information about your purchasing habits. All are fair game for thieves to use against you, in a bid to steal your identity. Subvert this tactic by buying a shredder. Any document with your personal info needs to be shredded, so that information can be protected.
Store your important personal documents in a very safe place. This means a locked file cabinet, in a not so obvious corner of your house. Or better yet, a hidden away safe. Any means you have available to you will suffice. Just take the step to protect that info. Otherwise you can’t be too surprised when it is used against you.
Finally, insurance is never a bad idea. Identity theft insurance may be the way to go. Insurance will provide you with money and resources to recover your identity, should you become a victim of theft. That money, and those resources could prove invaluable on your road to recovery. So why not have the option?
