Fake Software and Your Online Security

It was not many days ago when I got scared seeing the screenshot of “My Computer” with a “your computer is infected” message. The message further went on to suggest that I should scan my system to keep my personal data safe from intruders. I was tempted to click on the “Scan Now” button but then I stopped because I had a haunch that something is wrong and then I saw what that is.

The number of drives showing on my screen (Just C, D and one DVD drive) was far lesser than the number of drives I have in my computer (apart from 5 partitions I have DVD drive and several other virtual drives and online drives).

I was saved by chance, but not everyone is so lucky, at least not every time. That is why we need to train our mind to stay away from such threats.

What’s the threat?

There are many real-sounding fake antiviruses and anti-spyware programs floating around the Internet, and each one of them has name like AdvancedPCTweaker, PC Cleaner 2008, DriveCleaner, Antivirus 2009, Antivirus 2010, Antivirus live, ANG Antivirus, Antimalware, PerfectCleaner, etc. These programs also go by the name of “Rogue” software.

Symptoms of Rogue software

Once installed, rogue software will slow your system down, and lots of promotional and other pop-ups starts coming up. The next thing they do is steal your personal as well as financial information, and the final blow will be the charge levied on your credit card (the one you used to buy any of the rogue software) for the purchase you never done. Getting refund will not be easy as the makers of rogue software constantly change their identity, URL, and addresses. You or your bank will have hard time finding them.

How to remain safe?

  • It is advisable to ask for recommendation from a trusted source before purchasing any antivirus, antimalware, or any other security software.
  • Do not give in to the panic, and think before you click on Scan now pop-up showed by any antivirus. Verify the source of the popup before taking any action (other than clicking the close button).
  • Google for the name of antivirus you want to purchase to verify if it’s genuine or rogue.
  • If you are to download freeware then do it from a trusted source like sourceforge, cnet, filehippo, etc.

10 minutes spent on verifying the credential of the  security application you are going to buy is enough to safeguard you against rogue software.
