The Internet provides a fertile ground for identity thieves to rob people off their personal information, if not financial. These people then use your personal information to create a duplicate identity, which they use to get financial benefit at your expense. Many a times, it is already too late before you come to know of the scam, as websites or offices of FTC, credit bureau, or Social Security Number is not the coolest place in the town to hang out. Along with keeping a tab on your personal data, it is a better to watch out where you are feeding your information in. - Do not type-in your e-mail ID wherever you see the big sexy sleek word F-R-E-E written above, beneath or on the right of a form asking for your e-mail IDs. Giving crappy freebies out is one of the strategies spammers and scammers use.
- Do not sign-up until you know what you are signing up for. There are a lot of fake social networking sites created with a single motto to steal your personal information. Watch out for such services. Sign up only for the services that are popular. Leave the obscure ones out.
- Search Google for the name of the website or its owners by adding by adding scams, cheating, fraud, etc., words at the end preceded by a + sign to see if they have any rip-off report or consumer complaints, etc. Avoid the ones that are known cheaters.
- If you are asked to submit your address, telephone numbers, and other details then check if the website has working SSL certificate.
- If you are unsure then do not feed in correct information. Feed in any meaningless words to get access to the stuff you went there for.
- You can also use a secondary mail ID to sign-up for websites that are not very credible.
There is nothing rocket science involved in keeping yourself safe from identity thieves. The tips shared above are mere common sense. Using them will not be difficult at all. You just need to include it in your daily habit.
