How to Protect Your Personal Information from Identity Thieves?

An identity thief uses many techniques to rip you off your personal information. From installing a malicious program and stealing your data to just asking for information, they do everything in their might. Therefore, you need to be extra careful when sharing your personal information with anyone. You should guard it the way you would guard your financial information. I am going to share some tips that will help you protect your valuable details about yourself, and I would suggest you to apply these to your daily life.

  1. Guard your personal details like you protect your money. Ask why when someone ask you to produce your social security number, driving license or any other identity proof. Do not hand them any card without being satisfied of why they need it.
  2. Many people have claimed that their identities were stolen by someone they knew. I know this is creepy, but this is how things are, so ask yourself if you are comfortable giving your personal details to the person asking for that.
  3. Do not carry your social security number with you. Any identification proof like driving license will be enough to verify who you are.
  4. Do not just through in dustbin the document containing your social security number, date of birth, driving license number, or any other personal details. Shred it before disposing it.
  5. If someone calls you and ask for your information, do not give that until you are certain who is on the other side. To be on the safer side, do not give any information to the person dialing to you. If it is absolute must then tell him that you will dial the company he is representing and will give the details.
  6. Do not share any information in reply to the mail you receive. Identity thieves often portray as a company’s representative to execute their agenda.
  7. Unless and until you see an HTTPS prefix and a padlock in the status bar, do not share any information personal or financial. You never know who is after stealing what.
  8. Password protect your computer.
  9. Do not allow unauthorized access.
  10. If you are using mail clients on your computer then do not keep the mails you send in outbox of your mail client.

Follow these identity theft protection tips and you will mostly remain safe.
