Identity Theft Protection – 3 Preventive Measures

It is better to keep yourself safe from the evil gaze of identity thieves then to take corrective measures when damage is done. Prevention is always better. And in identity protection, information plays a very vital role. In this article, I will show you three ways to keep your identity safe on the Internet.

Keep abreast of recent development

Information is the key. The more you are informed of the tricks played by thieves, the safer you will be. Proper information will keep you one step ahead of the identity thieves. Read as much as you can about recent developments, but do not devote insane amount of time on that. You can subscribe to Federal Trade Commission’s ID Theft site and id-protect.org using your e-mail or RSS feed to stay on top of the news. You can also follow credit bureau and this website on twitter to stay up-to-date. This will help you avoid many major and even minor attacks.

Teach your kids

Kids are gullible, and identity thieves knows that, so they try to trap kids in revealing important details like your credit card information, social security number, name, date of birth, and addresses, etc. You need to educate your kids about the risks related to revealing sensitive information to strangers. Ask them not to give out any details to people they met on the Internet. Tell them how badly it will affect you and your family. Ask them to not share even particulars of family. Tell them sharing any details about family will make you all vulnerable.

Delete history on non-personal computers

You should not leave any trace of your web usage on any computer that is not yours — be it your friend’s PC, or your office system, or a public computer in a cyber café. These are the places where hackers and crackers look for preys. Make sure to log out of all your accounts properly and delete cookies, cache files, and history before vacating a public computer. Once everything is done, close the browser. This will remove the leftovers from the system.

If you are conscious of your web usage, you will not become victim of identity thieves, but the moment you drop your guard, you become vulnerable for attacks.
