Internet Scams You May Not Expect
There are so many ways that scammers will try and take advantage of you, it’s almost impossible to try and list them all. Keeping up on the scams as much as possible is a necessity however. If you want to keep yourself safe from the identity thieves lurking about. Here are a few of the lesser known scams you could befall online.
Work from home opportunities. If you get a lot of spam mail, and most of us do, then you’ve no doubt received numerous work from home offers. These are always scams. Just like the famous Nigerian email scams, these are intended to get you to give away personal information and maybe even money. You’ll never see a return on your investment, and likely any information you provide will be used against you. So be careful when applying for that too good to be true job offer.
If you find yourself using websites like eBay fairly often, there’s another scam you should look out for. Oftentimes an identity thief will use eBay to take advantage of you through the bidding system. You’ll bid on an item, and then be outbid at the last moment by someone else, with a much larger bid. The seller will then contact you telling you they have a similar item for sale for cheap, they just need some of your information. Never respond! This is almost always a thief trying to solicit information you’ll regret giving out.
Also, remember to never shop online from a public internet connection. Identity thieves are known to patrol public internet connections, where they can track what you’ve been looking at, and sometimes even the information you’ve entered. Identity thieves use this to assume your identity, and either steal your money, or use your information to apply for lines of credit or even bank loans.
