Protect Your Bank Statements

A bank statement is a fairly simple piece of information that most people still receive through their mail, despite the ability to conduct all of your banking affairs online through practically any bank.  Bank statements are also pieces of information that many people readily throw away without even considering the possible consequences of their actions.  And that’s why I’ll say this, your bank statement is a vitally important piece of personal information, and one little document that will give an identity thief the key to absolutely everything they need to know about you.  All in one convenient package I might add.

Which is why you should always dispose of your bank statements in the proper fashion.  In the wrong hands your information could be used against you for the thief to learn just enough information about your account to take control and take your money.  Or even for them to have enough information to pose as you and open up a line of credit, or take out a loan in your name.

Now if you still receive bank statements through the mail, you should probably be filing them in a safe place so that you have a record of your account activity, should anything ever go wrong with your account.  These will provide accurate, detailed information to help you fix any account errors, or to have evidence of anything fraudulent, should your identity be stolen.  But if you choose not to keep hold of the information, make sure everything is shredded, either by a document shredder, or by yourself.  This way the information is destroyed, and relatively impossible for an identity thief to reconstruct and use against you.

The first step to preventing your identity from being stolen, is to protect it as well as humanly possible yourself.  So never underestimate the importance of something seemingly simple, like your bank statement.  Because in the hands of an identity thief, your bank statement can be a devastatingly effective weapon against you.
