Protecting Your Identity Away From Home
When you’re going to be traveling far away from home, there is some planning you need to consider, besides just travel arrangements. You need to think about the safety of your identity. Not taking the proper precautions could see you having your identity stolen fairly easily. There are thieves lurking around every corner abroad, and know that you’ll be an easier target while venturing in unfamiliar territory. Know the warning signs, and take the proper precautions to protect yourself, and your identity.
One of the best ways to keep yourself safe, is to plan effectively. Try and plan out expenses, and decide how you’re going to pay for everything. If you plan on using a credit card, try and stick to the one card. That way if it’s stolen, they can’t do any more damage beyond that one card. Or if you plan on using cash, you need to have a back up contingency in case your cash is stolen.
Again, in the planning category, try calling ahead and checking to see any particular known scams in the area. Contact local law enforcement before your travels and ask for advice on areas and possible scams to avoid. You’ll be glad you did when you’re sidestepping some of the common identity theft scams lurking all around.
If you’re going to be away for even just a few days, make sure that you contact the post office, or a neighbor to collect your mail for you. You don’t want mail sitting out in your mailbox, that’s unsafe. Anybody could walk buy and take your mail, then use the personal information against you to steal your identity. You’d never even know until it was too late.
Finally, make sure you use the same common sense practices that you would use at home. Be wary of ATM machines you don’t trust, or in bad areas. Be careful about how your credit card is handled by employees at any given store or restaurant. Especially be careful with anybody that asks for any kind of information that seems irregular or unnecessary to you.
